WHAT ARE ACNE SCARS TREATMENT?
- Acne scars are usually caused by inflammation of the skin caused by engorged skin pores filled with excess oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. The pore swells, causing a break in the follicle wall.
- Depending on the depth of the break, the characteristics of acne scars vary. Shallow lesions are usually minor and heal quickly. But if there is a deep break in the wall of the pore, infected material spills out into the surrounding tissue, creating deeper excavated lesions.
- The skin attempts to repair these lesions by forming new collagen fibers. These repairs usually aren’t as smooth and flawless as the original skin. The common types of scarring can be seen in this image.
- The optimal treatment plan depends upon the presence/absence of active acne, severity/location of scars, age, and the patient’s lifestyle & expectations.
This requires a thorough assessment which can only be done by experts. Treatment options include:
- Chemical peels
- Subcision
- Micro-Needling (Dermaroller)
